Background

We were asked to come up with a new technology concept to present at the Rugby 7s tournament at Twickenham, with the focus on improving the way that commentators receive information about the game.

The problem

Currently, there is a heavy reliance on manual data collection and processing to generate real-time insights from a Rugby 7s game for commentators, teams and fans. ‘Spotters’ are located around the stadium who tally when they identify key events occurring and record this data on excel spreadsheets. This data is later updated through the Rugby 7s API which is integrated with the Rugby 7s website.

The solution

We were asked to come up with a new technology concept to present at the Rugby 7s tournament at Twickenham, with the focus on improving the way that commentators receive information about the game.

Commentator's App

I interviewed 5 rugby commentators to understand the pain points around the current journey they take during a match. They rely on paper based stats and facts to comment on players, and have to make their own mental record of significant moves in a game.

Based on these insights, I created a dashboard to surface stats from the video AI, and also the API that fuels the official rugby 7s website - this allowed all the data to be accessed from one place.

I also explored the potential of the data and created some additional features with the ability to compare players and easily see strengths and weaknesses.

Taking it further

I also created a video with an animated overlay to bring to life a concept of what the video AI data could look like if it was displayed in a live feed.

Taking it further

I also created a mock view of what a sponsor dashboard could look like to see how much exposure logos are receiving.
